Newsletter #2 – November 28, 2025

Access this edition of our newsletter here.

It includes this message from Dr Kate Cowcher:

Welcome to the second issue of our Africa Scotland Art History Heritage (ASAHH) Network newsletter.

A warm welcome to our new members! We are happy to see new colleagues join the network from across Scotland, the US and Tanzania. We are now a growing, international community of nearly 40 academics, artists, curators and heritage-sector professionals. Network members are broadly concerned with the arts and historic heritages of Africa, and with collaborative projects between Scotland and the African continent. Do spread to the word to colleagues who you think might like to join us, or have projects or collections remits or personal interests that might be enriched through engagement with our members.

Below you will find members’ news, and details of both upcoming events and visitors of note this December. Also included is a ‘Save the Date’ for a study day on art and archives between Algeria and France, next April.

Most importantly, on December 10, 3.30-5pm we will hold our inaugural ASAHH Network Forum via MS Teams. We will hold Network Forum events online periodically over the next year. They are intended to be collegial gatherings for network members to share brief overviews of current or recent projects, or to put a call out for collaborators on a specific project. We welcome member suggestions for specific themes future Forum events.

For our ASAHH Network Forum 01, we’re looking forward to hearing from Dr. Zachary Kingdon (National Museums Scotland), Dr Winani Thebele (National Museums Liverpool), Samuel Reilly (University of St Andrews), Dr Dominicus Makukula (University of Dar Es Salaam) and Kirke Kook (Fife Council). The link to join us is found below!

This month’s signature image comes from British-Kenyan artist Grace Ndiritu’s contribution to the Ignorant Art School series at the University of Dundee’s Cooper Gallery. The exhibition runs until December 13th, and offers a powerful rumination on protest, community and spirituality.

As always, please be in touch with feedback or suggestions for the ASAHH Network, or if you wish to share news or events via our channels.
